In collaboration with Roger Penrose, Stuart formulated the orchestrated objective reduction model of consciousness, around the idea that the operations of microtubules in brain cells, at the molecular and supramolecular level, account for the emergence of conscousness through quantum wave reduction. He was the lead organizer of the first Toward a Science of Consciousness annual conference, which is regarded as a landmark event in the field of consciousness studies and led to the creation of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona, with Stuart as Director.
